Honda vehicles odometer readings are 5% in error to their favor. They claimed it was not done in malice, just to make their customers think they are getting better fuel mileage than they actually are. It also saves them money on warranty claims. When you have a 36,000 mile warranty and you speed up the odometer by 5% then you're actually only on the hook for 34,200 miles. Spread over millions of vehicles that's a lot of money saved on warranty repairs you don't have to pay for. If I remember correctly Toyota tried to justify it by claiming their tolerance was 0%-4% fast. They claimed they did that so the driver couldn't possibly be breaking the speed limit without knowing it or some BS like that. It's a typical corporate tactic when caught scamming, try to paint it as a safety feature so people will let you off the hook. Throw out the safety card and people will back off for fear of angering the safety nazis. Of course the real reason was it saved them money.
