He was referring to CARB standards that are also used by some states in the Northeast. Our 2008 Grand Cherokee could only be sold in states that didn't use the CARB standards since the NOx emissions were too high. That's why most diesels use the urea system to reduce NOx.

Really? California is cleaning 'everyone else's' air? Last I heard, the jet stream flows from west to east. I have a very hard time picturing Denver's or Chicago's or Dallas' smog reaching the west coast. Sorry jjj, CA does not clean up everyone else's air. It does do a great job of using Oregon, Washington, Utah and Arizona's electricity and/or water.
