Reduced DEF usuage will not cause additional particulates unless the engine is compensating by reducing operating temperature. Reduced DEF will allow greater NOx output levels than if applied properly.
My thought is that VW needs a new DEF tune and a larger DEF tank so it still has a 10k mile range. This would allow performance to remain the same but with more DEF consumption. Luckily my 2003 TDI avoids all this controversy...
