EGR clogging has been around for a long time. It was a concern on my 2005 Passat. Guess they did a fair amount of EGR back then as they didn't have the fancier solutions like DPF with regen for soot, or urea for NOx.
The solution was an "Italian Tune-up", hard acceleration up a hill blowing all the soot out the tailpipe, or regular cleaning.
