I have only followed this on the outside since I don't have a VW and have not intentions of purchasing one so I may not completely understand the issue, but as I understand it, VW was making the vehicle act differently when doing the EPA testing and then emit more pollution at other times. So wouldn't this mean that the EPA rating would still be valid as an indicator of what the mileage will be once "fixed"? I guess I don't see what everyone is up in arms about with the mileage side. They bought the car knowing it is rated for 40 MPG (random number as I don't know what the actual number is) and were actually getting 45 MPG (again, random number used as an example). If it is reduced back to 40 MPG after the fix, they are still getting what VW told them they would get and what they should have expected when they purchased the car.
Before someone pipes in about it isn't the MPG issue, but the fraud issue, the whole fraud deal is a different story. I completely understand why the uproar over that and I guess if you purchased based solely on the amount of pollution being put out so you are "green", then I can understand the knot in your knickers. But most of what I keep seeing is based on the reduced MPG and unfortunately, some will simply see this as an opportunity to sue even though very little harm has come to them. That isn't to say that VW shouldn't be punished, they absolutely should be if for no other reason than they were dishonest.
