I would be interested to know where you are getting this information. My owner's manual specifically says that it is to be washed with a mild household detergent. Many others also have specific listings for how the roofs should be cleaned. I've never seen any published materials that say a rubber roof should never be washed.
I'm going to revisit my manual on this as well. If you are not supposed to wash it, why all the products available to do so, unless the products are meant for some other type of roof covering. Cleaned mine with Spic and span using a soft brush on a pole. did not scrub hard, but also experienced the white particles on the driveway after rinsing.
