5.9 Cummins diesel was first offered for sale in the Dodge pickups in model year 1989. 160 HP - 400 TQ.
The Duramax 6.6 was first offered for sale in the GM twins, Cheverolet and Sierra, pickups in model year 2001. LB7 300 HP - 520 TQ.
That's 12 full years after Cummins first or almost exactly 1/2 as many years of Duramax production build.
Duramax had built it's 1,500,000th 6.6 engine in Moraine, OH for the GM trucks in November 2012 and has just over 1,600,000 Duramax 6.6 engines built as of April 2013. The Moraine, OH Duramax engine plant has a 200,000 build capacity per year and the only plant building the Duramax 6.6 engine for GM trucks.
Cummins built it's 2,000,000th 5.9/6/7 diesel engine for Dodge/Ram trucks in April 2013.
Simple math concludes the following:
In 24 year of build, Cummins 2,000,000 5.9/6.7 diesel engines made.
In the same 24 years of production, GM Duramax will have built 3,200,000 Duramax 6.6 diesel engines.
1.6 times as many Duramax 6.6 engines built as both Cummins 5.9 and 6.7 built. combined.
