The 1989 Dodge D250 LE pickup with the Cummins 5.9 I had purchased for my engineering business was not! The diesel was a novelty when first put into service but after about the first year no one wanted to drive it as it was so loud and rode like an unsprung buckboard. Some of the problems with the truck were the tranny puked at 39,XXX miles, replace the lift pump, replace the water pump, oil leaks, ate tires which wore smooth in less than 20K, and several other minor issues all before 40K on the clock. Tranny, L.P., and W.P. were all just after the warranty was up and not covered. Had enough and it was not being used so it was sold with just under 40,000 and took a financial bath
Yes they were loud. I didn't like them either for that reason. What rear ratio was it? If it was an '89 with the 727 torqueflight transmission, it was solid. If it was the "90 with the 518 O/D with no locking TC, they were an overheated transmission waiting to happen. A 4.10 rear end over the stock 3.55 helped put them over the 2100rpm stall speed for better fluid coupling and less heat. But then that limited speed with their 2500rpm breath test. Lift pump on an '89-90? Please elaborate? Waterpump is two 10mm bolts. Easy quick change by even a pencil pusher reference bookworm. Tires worn out on any HD pickup in 20k is user error. Those old 235/85 R16's were tough to beat. You took a financial bath on a practically new Dodge/Cummins pickup? You should have let your wife sell it.
I have to cry foul on this one! I owned a '89 Dodge with a Cummins, and I had NONE of these problems! yes the ride was harsh on these as Dodge had to build a truck to fit the engine. I owned a Ford, it was a 7.3, and it was a good pickup.... I never had the gonads to own a Chevy with a diesel, as their prior experience with diesel power was LESS than stellar...
