Water pump running but nothing on

I've been living in TC for about 2 months now and it's been my experience that my water pump only turns on when a) water is running or b) after it's been off for awhile and I turn it on so it fills all the lines.

However, the last few days, I've been hearing it turn on intermittently for a half of a second every 30 mins or so. My initial reaction was PANIC, thinking there was a leak somewhere. I searched everywhere and followed every water line I could. I took off panels and removed drawers so that I could get a good look at the water lines to try and find the leak. Nothing. I see no sign of water anywhere. There's a few points (ie: under/behind my fridge) that I can't quite see but I don't think there's any leaks. So what is going on? Why does my water pump keep putting water in the lines? Could it just be a gravity thing where water is falling down the lines? I can't help but freak out every time I hear that vibration noise of my water pump, wondering where it's going. Thanks in advance for all the help!!
  • 1) bad check valve in the pump
    2) internal leak in the pump that allows backflow.

Chances are good that if you rebuild (or replace) the pump the problem will go away. You'd notice that much water leaking out of the system.
  • If you are finding no water leak and your pump is otherwise working properly , more than likely there is an air leak in the suction line between the water tank and the pump . Check the connection for tightness . If it is easily accessible , replace the hose , they do deteriorate over time .
  • Just wanted to update everyone. It appears the running pump had something to do with my water heater. I had a feeling that might have been the case, as I've been taking cold showers all summer but the other day, I decided to take a hot shower. The problem started after I heated my tank.

Today, I flushed out my water heater, as I read it is good to do this every so often, especially in places where there is hard water. So I dumped and flushed the water heater. Filled it back up. And haven't heard the pump run since. Hmm.. maybe the the pressure relief valve was leaking a bit? Maybe it was just running little by little trying to top off the water tank? Not exactly sure but it seems the problem has been resolved. So happy there were no hidden leaks!! Thanks to everyone for taking the time to help. I always learn so much from everyone on here! Don't know what I'd do without you all!
  • Good to hear it has quit. We have similar issue with our 5th occasionally. Seems to happen most after "disturbing" the water system...draining and refilling the tank, switching from city water to RV tank/pump, etc. I think our issue is air entrapped in the system and slowly de-pressuring enough to kick the pump on. Ours doesn't do it often, and it stops after I run several fawcets.
But...don't ever just ignore it...look around a bit. You know how it happen...first time you ignore it there will be a leak.
