I too have the Surflo Whisper pump. The name does not describe the pump as bigfoorford stated. The accumulator does not make the pumps quieter, it only reduces the frequency of times the pump turns on. When someone uses the toilet at night, the pump seldom comes on waking others up.
You can install the accumulator in any position. My preference is to mount the accumulator with the inlet pointing down. This allows you to completely drain the tank. It is important to have correct air pressure in the accumulator, and the pump. If incorrect, the amount of water held in the tank typically will be incorrect.
