Generally, there is one of the burners that is a higher BTU burner than the others. Usually it is one of the front ones as they prefer to have the high heat not so close to the walls. My stove is a 3 burner one, one in front, two in back. Front one for boiling or really high heat, the other two for warming more slowly.
It's one reason I have a two burner Coleman stove and cook outside, weather permitting. Has about twice the BTU and takes half as long to boil water for pasta or make coffee in the perculator.
