I have tried 7, 8 and 9 links on my Blue Ox hitch with little change in the feel of the combo. The tighter the hitch the firmer the ride, the looser the hitch the softer the ride. None of them felt unstable.
As you noted you can reduce your drive axle load which seems like a good idea. However, the the manual says to adjust the hitch so the TT and TV sit level so that is what I did. Actually it is a tad nose down.
