wd hitch question

I finally got the old girl out of storage. My new F150 handled her very well. That said I have a WD hitch that I would like to setup and use (since I have it already) I know I need to make the final adjustments with the rig on flat level ground but would there be any reason I couldn't do a preliminary setup in my sloped driveway then pull on the street to finalize? don't really want to do the entire install on the road would rather do it in the driveway then when we go to pull out next time I could stop and finalize it.
  • I think you could as long as your sloping driveway doesn't have any dips or bumps in it and maintains a consistent slope.

The best place I've found to do the setup is a vacant parking lot.

    Just my 2 cents.
  • You can set it up in the DW in order to have the clearance to clear your sloped apron but i would set it up correctly in the street or a level lot.

It can take awhile to set it correctly because you need to load the truck up for a trip for proper ball height and make multiple adjustments that may take an hour or two.
You need to set up the hitch on level ground so you measure the bottom of the frame to the ground, front and rear. Do not use a level, take measurements.
Then you should drive it to test it . Sometimes you need to change the ball to a long or short shaft to gain or lose an inch of height.
Do it right , you won't know its back there.

  • Hey , I know how impatient Windsor drivers are...lol. I did my whole adjustments on the street ,but put som orange cones behind the trailer and kept 4 ways on and drivers figured it out. But a parking lot makes sense ...bring every tool you need with you and more
  • I had mine all set up long before we went and picked up our special ordered TT using measurements from Jayco and instructions from Reese. When we picked up the trailer, it was perfect.
How did you get her home? If you know the height of the coupler with the trailer on level ground, you should be able to set up the hitch without the trailer and when hitched up, it should be real close if not spot on.
  • Thanks guys. The f150 handles fine without. More just piece of mind since I have it.
