Despite this not the being the "right way" to calculate, account for, or add payload totals, your thoughts are actually correct.
Whatever weight is transferred to the trailer could technically be looked at as "re-gaining" that amount of payload or rear axle weight capacity.
Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
If in doubt, a truck scale will easily prove it.
