weights on tires

I just replaced my original tires with the same brand and size tires( Michelin 265/70r18). I now have a slight shake when I drive above 60 mpg which I never had before. My question is how much weight is too much on a tire? I noticed that on one tire it had 3oz( 2-2.5 weights). When I ran retreads years Ago I never had this much weight.
  • If your shop can't get it right, have the tire replaced or force balanced. If it can be balanced, a road force balancer will be able to do it. The machines are expensive and not all shops have them.
  • Mike and Terry Ann - if the shake only happens at above 60 mpg apply Red Green's principle of "Leave 'er". That is really good fuel economy.

    :) :)
  • I would take the truck back to the tire shop explain what is going on and get a re-balance of the tires. You did get the alignment done too I assume.

On my Jeep I run a 36" Super Swamper bias ply. It takes a ton of weight to balance out. I don't think there's such a thing as too much. Well I'm sure if you had to put 10lbs on there that would be too much but you get my point.

As an alternative, you can put air soft pellets in your tire to self balance. That's been very effective for me. In my dually rears I also have one sand bag per tire that has the same effect. I got them at a big rig tire shop.
