Weird Tire Issue

I experienced a very weird tire problem on my Ram dually (at least, weird in my opinion).

A couple of days ago when pulling an unloaded dual-tandem gooseneck trailer, all was well...until stopping to get fuel. Immediately after getting back on the interstate, the truck began shaking like crazy. Pulled over, checked everything, no noticeable issues. I found where a weight was missing, so I went to my preferred tire shop and had that tire re-balanced. That yielded no improvement in the shaking. Back to the tire shop and they removed the remaining 5 tires to re-balance. That's when we found the issue.

The right rear outside tire had a flat spot on the inside portion of the tread. It looked similar to locking the brakes on an over-inflated trailer tire. But the pressure was exactly the same as its companion tire, which had no damage at all.

So I'm left trying to figure out how in the world this could have happened. Usually on a dually, if you have that kind of damage to one tire, it'll be the same on the one next to it. The only thing I can figure is that the tire must have a had a defect that created a bulge and caused it to have uneven wear.

  • If that is not the tire with the missing weight check it's balance. Had a tire break a belt suddenly and the faster I drove the more the rear would bounce. Jacked it up and when spinning I could see it out of round.

    Keep us posted.
  • Yes, had a tire break a belt on the truck allowing the tire air pressure to push that portion of the tire out further thereby wearing out that spot. Loss of rubber there put the tire out of balance. The tire blew as expected, but I was only driving it on low speed back roads.

  • I had not considered that a belt might have broken and resulted in a section being pushed out. The tire certainly is out of round, and very obviously so.

I'm getting new tires tomorrow (all 6), so we'll inspect the bad tire and see if we can determine the issue. These tires are Toyo AT-2, and they've been excellent otherwise. 50K miles on them now and still about 20K miles left on the tread wear. I'm going back with Toyo's, but this time I'm using the new commercial-tread tire which has stronger sidewalls. We commonly use this truck to haul the gooseneck mentioned, plus a 16,000 backhoe. Overall, the weight is somewhere around 22K to 23K, so it wouldn't surprise me that a tire(s) might fail with those kind of loads.
