My TT was 7500lbs pre kids and now it probably weighs 8000lbs with all the stuff for kids. I pulled the first 3 years with a 2012 ram 1500 qc hemi with 3.92 axle.
I ordered my new truck in January with is a RAM 3500 CCLB SRW. I chose the diesel as I plan on upgrading to a fifth wheel within the next five years which is probably how long I'll keep this truck.
The gas engines do rev a lot no matter which one you get and get roughly the same milage of 13-14 overall. I get almost 2.5mpg better with the new truck and it weighs 2700lbs more. Emissions are another worry. They make me nervous but as I said I'm hoping to keep it only 5 years. I feel the gas engines are better for the long haul if you don't pull crazy weight or put on a lot of miles.
Imy trying to travel all over and didn't want to plan my route based on mountains so I went with the diesel. It deffinetly cost more but is a much easier tow.
If he plans on towing in the mountains expect 4k rpms no matter which axle ratio you get. If he stays close to home and keeps trips short I would look at gas motors but if trips are longer and upgrades for a camper are in the future I'd consider the diesel.
I know many people with Ford's and RAMS and all are happy and really haven't had any issues with either. All are towing 35'+ fifth wheels 14klbs and higher.
