I run my wimpy little gasser 7500 miles between oil changes per the onboard OCI. What diesel oil is so inferior that it needs to be changed every 5k miles? Isn't the OCI for the newer diesels 15k using any manufacturer approved and API certified engine oil? Has anyone here suffered a catastrophic engine failure due to not using a specific brand of oil?
Sadly the newer diesels seem to have shorter intervals than ever. The Ford 6.7 is between 5k and 10k and the Duramax is similar. Not sure what the Cummins is. I was a little suprised by this when I got my F350. After warranty expires I am going to push it up to 15-20k if the oil holds up.
The shorter oil change intervals on the newer diesels are due to the emissions controls that add additional soot into the oil through the action of the EGR valve. My oil looks like squid ink when I change it. The newer engines are designed to handle it but the oil still needs changing sooner.
