Until there is a measurable improvement in engine longevity or performance, John is right. Has anyone here ever lost an engine because they weren't using amsoil or any brand of synthetic oil? I use Mobil-1 because of the very slight chance of higher bearing temps while towing in Florida's summer heat. In reality, it's probably a waste of money and John is right.
I tow heavy, so I use the best oil/gearlube/filters and so on I can find. I keep my rigs usually 300K and in my opinion it is worth the extra money. If I were to trade rigs every few years I would run the cheapest of everything and not worry about it.
I watched an F-550 rollback run ten years of hard service. The block heater was NEVER used (cord never even unwrapped), it never got anything but regular 15W-40 oil from Pep Boys and Wal-Mart, usually store brands. It ran perfectly when hit with 930,000 miles.
Synthetic oil is a waste of money!
