What can a Jeep Cherokee diesel really pull?

Hi. I had asked about the 08 09 jeep grand cherokee with the diesel. I don't own one but they sound like they might be a good choice but I've been hearing some conflicting things about how good it is at towing. I know it's rated for 7200 but I would really appreciate hearing what people have pulled or tried to pull with these. I know it's less than ideal for my 29 foot TT because of the length but could it handle the weight (6000 or so) if I wanted to pull it occasionally? My wife's durango is what pulls it now.
Thanks much for your time.
  • If you are in the market for a new vehicle, the 2014 Grand Cherokees have an ecodiesel option with a 3.0 liter from VM Mitori instead of the Mercedes engine. There's some kind of production delay since there are about 1,700 stacking up in Detroit all stuck in the "final inspection" phase.

Our 2008 Grand Cherokee has about 131,500 miles / 210,000 km and runs fine.

Love the idea of a quality powertrain like the Mercedes but in something affordable like a jeep. Too bad they don't make them anymore. The ones for sale don't seem to go cheap unless the miles are up there. How many km would be getting to the point were the rest of the jeep would be wearing out? I'd like to find one under 100,000 but I think lots of others would like that too.

    Thanks.

Ya, prolly before your time, that was back when AMC was making them in South Bend and Beloit. CJ-7's were an extended frame of the CJ-5. They had 360cid engines and could pull like a mule. The Wrangler name came along later.

MB doesn't make that small of an engine. They buy them from VM to install in GC and the new Ram 1500. There's a GL350 that I see in the MB dealership twice/year getting an oil change. It's got a VM engine too.
