What can I safely pull with my 2011 2500HD 6.0L GMC?

The wife and I currently have a 2011 Keystone Outback 230RS toy hauler and the above truck pulls it beautifully! We will be looking to upgrade to a larger camper but are confused with what the truck can realistically haul safely.

What are some of you pulling with my similar truck? We are not opposed to a fifth wheel. I see some people pulling 30'+ 5ers with the same truck but it just looks like too much weight. Am I over thinking this?
  • With the 3.73 rear end I would try to stay under about 10K lbs max loaded weight. The 4.10 would be good for another 3K or so lbs. Just my opinion. Good luck.
  • Whats the GCVWR????? And do you have a sticker like ADT shows?
  • I just checked my door tag -

    GVWR = 9500
    GAWR F = 5200
    GAWR R = 6200

    I do have the 3:73 gears
  • Thank you for all the replies. Obviously we can ignore what the salesmen tell us....
  • Okay - Going by the chart in the PDF that was posted it states tow capacity at 13,000/14,000. Mind you, I have not looked at my door panel yet but this should be a good indication. I do have the max tow package as I have the Titan 2.5" receiver hitch.
  • You will be limited by the GCWR/tow rating for any bumper pull/TT. That's in the 9500 pound range for 3.73 axle and 14k pound range for 4.10.

    For 5th wheel, it gets messier. You will probably be limited at 9500-ish pounds again for 3.73, but payload limited for 4.10 axle.

    You can determine the axle ratio from the factory by locating the sticker in the glove bow listing all the RPO codes. It will have one of the following: GT4 = 3.73 and GT5 = 4.10.

    Payload will be indicated by the Tire and Loadign sticker on the driver's door or door jam. It looks like this: Note what your truck has where mine says 2051.

  • Thank you for the link. It looks to be quite informative. I will look at the door tag after work today.
