Is the OP talking about rattle if he had say a bike carrier in a receiver or removing excessive play between receiver and WDH shank? There are many anti-rattle devices on the market. Just google "hitch rattle" or hitch "anti-rattle". They range from a simple U-bolt design to overkill like in photo.
The anti-rattle devices won't help a WDH much, if at all. Does make it somewhat harder for someone to steal your shank/hitch head tho. and in some jurisdictions it's illegal to keep the hitch head on. But if it's bolted in place, it isn't illegal (like in BC).
To remove play between a receiver and shank, have heard of welding a couple of nuts on the side of the receiver tube and using bolts in them to tighten against the shank. Some shanks apparently cause more play and I think Reese is one of them, which is what we have and may look at doing this one day.
