It's really a judgement call. I know that when we got into RVing I wanted to have room to expand if the want or need was there. We bought a one ton dually and I'm really glad we did.
After starting out with an '08 Montana Mountaineer (38') we upgraded to an '11 Montana (38'), which ended up being about 3k heavier. Then this spring we graduated into our '14.5 Mobile Suites, which weighs in at over 17k.
With the MS being so much heavier I wanted just a little more truck so ... We're just a week or so away from taking delivery of a 2015 Ram 3500 Laramie with the HO Cummins and Aisin tranny, which will boost our towing capability to about 24k. Now we'll have plenty of truck to handle the mountains not to mention the flats. LOL
You have to ask yourself "is this 'thee' trailer for us long-term"? "Do we have enough truck to safely handle our trailer?" If you have any doubt start out as heavy duty as you can afford, you'll thank yourself in the long run.
