In all due respect to the OP I think it's important to point out a couple of things...
One..this wheel assy. didn't just come off with no warning. There had to be some smoke, noise and a definite pull to that side from the trailer. Being aware of what your vehicle is doing by feel as well as sight is very important.
There needs to be more attention to the rear view mirrors. Good driving habits means you scan those mirrors regularly and very often. The OP not even realizing this came off means he was definitley not scanning his mirrors.
Two. Swerving back and forth is NOT a good idea. Especially to avoid a plastic bucket. Once is OK but when you go back and forth you set up sway that could increase in amplitude and cause real problems.
Third. I am not one of those that claim you cannot tow at 70 safely. But in your case I think the speed contributed to and increased your part failure. If the tire was there at your last fuel stop it is very likely that the tire and drum were hot then. Touching the wheel near the hub with your fingers on a walk around would have brought a problem to your attention most likely.
For all those good folks who are new to this trailer towing thing out there. When you think you are all done pulling up stakes and got everything stowed...do a SLOW walk around your entire rig checking everything before you get in the cab and drive away. Turn on all the vehicle light and flashers. Routines are important. But the last walk around is CRUCIAL. This will help ensure you never drive away with your jacks down.
Now in the interests of good neighborly forum relations please take this next statement with good humor...It doesnt surprise me that the same guy who drove away with his jacks down didnt realize he had lost a wheel until he got home :)
I am sure if we had a lessor TV, it may have been different.
