The physics of those cables and guards are very interesting. The wood uprights are meant to snap off and as they do so they absorb the energy of forward momentum as they slow the vehicle down. I have watched videos and what is most impressive is watching big trucks hit the rails and they dont flip over. Digging into the median with the tires is a lot like the gravel on runaway ramps.
