Trains are much more efficient per lb to move freight long distances than trucks. Food loaded on trains from California to Chicago, to New York and stops in between. Yes, for smaller cities off the lines trucks are needed to pick up and deliver, just like local trucks pick up and deliver around the state. But cutting down on truck traffic on freeway long hauls would decrease oil usage, would be cleaner and greener for our air not to mention safer for automobiles on the road.
