What happens when you lose a tire at 70-75 MPH?

With the right equipment... Nothing.:B
At least as far as safety goes.
We just returned from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Upon parking in front of our house, we were shocked to find a passenger side tire/rim/drum gone. Apparently the bearing seized up and it got hot enough to bend the spindle before the tire came off. What is left of the bearing is welded to the spindle.
The TT towed fine all the way home. I know it was there at our last fuel stop, as we always do a walk around then. DW even had to do a quick lane change manuver, as a 5 gallon bucket rolled into our lane. She swerved to miss it, then it rolled back into the lane we served to, we swerved again, and it reversed direction sending it in front of us again, the third swerve finally cleared us of the bucket. I think it was being blown around by the cars in front of us wind wash as they avoided it. The tire was likely already gone by then, as that was pretty close to home... And the TT/TV handled that quite well.

As for the damage.. We will need a new axle assembly. or at least a new axle, and one new drum, bearings, and brake assembly. We will replace all bearings now. We will need a new tire and rim. The 3 remaining Michelin XPS RIBS did an awesome job. But I won't ask anymore of them. They are nearing 5 years old anyways, so they will be replaced with new ones.
The plastic wheelwell trim is gone, and will need to be replaced as well.

The axle parts seem to be hard to find on a quick search. It has the Lippert sealed bearing 5200# axles. They are no longer available from Lippert. Dexter has them, and they appear to be the same ones. Anyone know if they are? Are other Dexter components such as the Brake assemblies compatabile?

  • I, for one, am surprised that no one tried to wave you down and point out the problem. There must have been some smoke involved in this. I wonder if it maybe didn't happen close to home?

Congratulations on getting home OK. I have no issues with your speed or anything else.

    Stuff Happens.

Asolutely!! As I said in my OP, those tires are close to 5 years old, and have served me well. The TT will soon be sporting brand new Michelin XPS RIBS. In fact a lot of parts will be replaced. All new bearings for starters, and anything else that looks questionable while it is apart. I am a firm believer in spending the money to do it right. It will be better than new when it's done.

I could only say what my dad used to ask me. Did you learn anything from that experience?
Nothing I didn't already know. Parts can fail. It happens. Having excellent tires well above the load rating needed, and a TV well above what is needed, proved their worth today.

Swerving repeatedly (three wasn't it?) to avoid a plastic bucket while running 75 MPH towing your fifth wheel?

Mom taught me when you have nothing nice to say nothing at all.

Your weblink in your signature doesn't BTW.

What's the difference between a big dually and a regular dually?
Your mom taught you well... It is a TT, and it was discussed at the time. I will only swerve once... then it's a dead bucket.

The point is that in spite of all those that claim disaster awaits if anything goes wrong at legal speeds above 60-65,,, it just isn't so. THe rig handled a pretty severe avoidance manuver with one wheel missing!! Naturally We would not have done this knowingly... But isn't it nice to know that these TTs are not accidents waiting to happen when things go wrong?

In 2011, Chevy started calling it the Big Dually... I had a 2001 previously , and I know why it now deserves that moniker.:B

None reported. I would love to have it back. the drum is 400.00 if it is still good. The rim should be good. It is probably laying in the desert somwhere.
