What is FMVSS 110?

I was playing around with the Manufactures websites looking at trucks mostly. I was looking at the Tundra's website and found this quote under the disclosures on the website... the Tundra's payload number had a link to this.

"Payload is the GVWR minus curb weight and includes weight of occupants, optional equipment and cargo, limited by weight distribution. Payload is not the Vehicle Capacity Weight as defined by FMVSS 110, which will vary according to installed optional equipment." (Bold for emphasis)

What does this mean? I googled FMVSS 110 and I don't understand the legal gibberish (probably didn't find the right website).

Can anyone break FMVSS 110 down in laymen's terms? what does it mean, Payload is not the Vehicle Capacity Weight.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

  • Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it very much.

I have NO idea what Toyota was trying to say with this reference.

Of course their website also advertises that its the only truck to tow the space shuttle too....:R
  • § 571.110 Tire selection and rims and motor home/recreation vehicle trailer load carrying capacity information for motor vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less.

S1. Purpose and scope. This standard specifies requirements for tire selection to prevent tire overloading and for motor home/recreation vehicle trailer load carrying capacity information.

S2. Application. This standard applies to motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR or 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less, except for motorcycles, and to non-pneumatic spare tire assemblies for those vehicles.

    S3. Definitions.

Snipped for length as its pages and pages long. As it says its a tire and rim selection procedure for varoius vehicles under 10k lbs.
    clicky link

Use the clicky and see all the 571 FMVSS regulations. Scroll down to 110 tire and rim selections for under 10k lbs vehicles. Above 10k vehicle tire and rim selections is covered under 571.120.

IMO Toyota legal department could best give the reasons the add reads as it does or why they phrased it like that.
  • Wiki

It's a standard for tires on vehicles that weigh less than 10,000 lb. Obviously the vehicle gross weight would affect that. What they mean by that statement is obscure tho. Tundras are notorious weak in carry capacity tho.
  • The FMVSS 110 is the FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS section 110 that defines how to test and qualify Tires and Rims for a vehicle and determines the proper load rating requirements. (and probably lots of other legal stuff).......

    Hope that helps
