What is included in the Tow Package for the Expedition

I'm looking at the newer Ford Expedition & Expedition EL models and looking at their tow ratings on the guide on this site. There is a significant difference in two capacity if they have the "tow package". However, I haven't been able to find a definition of what is included in that package. Is it something that can be added if I purchase a used vehicle?

  • I have a 2013 Expedition with the HD Tow Package. It includes an integrated brake controller.

The HD towing package for the F-150 is more than the relays. It also includes larger capacity trans cooler and 7-pin wiring.

Are you thinking of changing from the Van that you just got?
  • The Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is standard on Expedition Limited, King Ranch® and Platinum, and available for XL and XLT.

    Includes:

    • Class IV Trailer Hitch receiver
    • Wiring harness w/4 & 7 pin connector
    • Heavy-duty auxiliary transmission oil cooler
    • Heavy-duty radiator
    • Electronic braking wiring kit
    • Integrated Trailer Brake Controller

    Here you go.

  • From a 2011 order guide:

    Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package
    — Class IV Trailer Hitch receiver
    — Wiring harness w/4 & 7 pin connector
    — Heavy-duty auxiliary transmission oil cooler
    — Heavy-duty radiator
    — Electronic braking wiring kit

If you plan on towing anything over about 3000 pounds (some states require over 2000 pounds), then you need an electric brake controller which is aftermarket for all Expeditions. There is some vehicle wiring required also that appears to be included with the HD trailing package only, but I'm not sure that is true. I suspect any example that has the 7-pin wiring in the rear bumper has the wiring under the dash as well.

The other big impact to towing capacity for automatics is the large capacity transmission cooler. I highly recommend it for any high walled trailer. They typically cost under $100 plus installation which any transmission shop can do for under $300.

    I'd start here http://www.fleet.ford.com/towing-guides/

For example in 2013 the Expedition with the HD tow package includes an upgraded radiator, Trans cooler, and a trailer brake controller.
  • I am not familiar with the expedition, but it appears some years include a larger radiator for the tow package. That could get expensive.
The usual tow features are transmission cooler, 3.73 or higher axle ratio, 7 pin wiring, and higher rated hitch. There should be plenty of used expeditions for sale with the towing package.
