What is the best way to check propane amount?

I think this would be the best place to get some ideas on the best, most accurate way to check the amount of propane on a bottle. I have seen, gauges that are used inline, as well as scales that can be used on an out of uses bottle. I have a lot of bottle for different applications and would like to check all of them. Is there a best way.
  • X2 on a scale. The empty weight (tare weight) of the bottle is usually stamped on the side.

  • Most accurate? Have the bottle filled and subtract the difference.

    Maybe second-best way?

  • A scale would be the most accurate as long as you're good at math.

I can usually tell by lifting the tank whether it is full, 1/2 full or nearly empty. Not very accurate but it's good enough to know when to fill the tanks.

I tried a couple of in line guages and both of them leaked not at the fittings but from inside the guage.
