The banks or credit card service companies do it as a way to limit fraud or liability for lost or stolen cards. It has been this way for a long time. It was noticeably worse when gas was higher. Don't blame the station. it happens to me too and I just run the card again. No big deal.
Precisely... stolen credit cards used to be used quite often at gas stations. Thieves would still credit cards and head straight to gas stations and offer to fill up people's gas tanks for pennies on the dollar... get $30 worth of fuel for $10. That way you don't catch the thief's tag number in surveillance video and they get cash against your charge card.
To combat problems like this, credit/debit card companies started to put limits on cards used at the pump where there is less chance of an employee recognizing your face, a video capturing your face or other identifying information etc.
I find it almost funny at the attitudes people get due to those limits. Its a reality of the world we live in. Crying about an establishment because of a safeguard put in place by your bank... priceless.
Personally, I would rather frequent an establishment that I thought was interested in limiting my exposure to theft or fraud... I guess some people just need something to complain about.
