I have looked into this "problem".
I found that it is not the bank doing it. I check my account daily. I have never seen a "pre-authorization" on the account.
It is not Visa or Discover or any other card company.
It is not the gas station.
It is not the "chip" in the new cards. The "problem" existed long before the "chip" arrived on the scene.
The entity responsible is the card processing software used by the card processing company that the business uses. When I was asking about the issue, several business managers/owners told me this. It sounds reasonable, so it just might be true!
