I have to unhook my fastgun to refuel also. On my last trip I was a little out of practice. My first refuel I unhooked the fastgun, fueled up, reattached the fastgun and drove away. A couple miles down the road I checked the mirror and realized I had forgot to put the locking pin back in.Thinking I must've left it on the pump I was mentally kicking myself. I made a planned stop at Cabelas and took the locking pin off the rear fastgun and figured I'd see if they had a similar sized replacement in their towing section. They didn't. When I got back out to the truck I put the rear pin back in and when I reached in my pocket for the keys I felt something else in there. The other locking pin! Glad I didn't buy one.
Now, (and what I always did before when I remembered) I unhook the bottom of the fastgun and put the pin back into it's holes while I'm fueling. That way it's right there to remind me to reinstall and doesn't get left behind.
I too needed to remove the Fastgun near the fuel fill door. I now got into the habit of always placing it inside the rear door of the truck cab after one time I placed it on the tire and drove off. The Fastgun fell to the concrete is such a way that the handle was facing up when I ran over it:

The fastguns are pretty touch... I have thought of seeing if I could buy parts from the mfgr but they still function properly
