From everything I have read also, it is as you mentioned, only the gears that are different. Change the gearing, and the tow rating changes.
Not sure if you know, but watch your tw! The non-replaceable factory receiver hitch tw rating is usually the limiting factor of what the 2500Burb's can tow.

Yes - and I had read up extensively about that before I even thought about buying the truck. I've taken a good look at the thing and I don't think it will be that hard to come up with a replacement hitch setup that should up the capacity. I'm pretty well outfitted as a welder/fabricator so replacing the hitch is on the list of to-do's.
