What size A/C unit?

I going to replace my current A/C unit which is 13.5K BTU but got to thinking...how does one calculate what size A/C unit one would need.

My TT is a Artic Fox 4 season 22-GQ.

Thanks,

  • 13.5k BTU can make my 28' box too cold. Either 13.5k or 15k should be fine, but agree with Soundguy - why?

Any 13.5K BTU roof mounted A/C will have the capability of freezing you out of a 22' travel trailer ... the real question is, what's the reason for replacing your current A/C? :@
  • Limited choices make decision easy.......

    13.5K didn't cool enough then 15K

Course the 15K will draw about 15 amps when running so that would be 1/2 of your available amp.
13.5K will draw about 12.5 amps and is probably on a 15A circuit breaker...which the 15K would trip
  • 22 feet long? Then 13,500 Btu's will cool that space really well.

However if you have canvas ends, it might not do so well. If you could describe the RV a bit better, it might help. Model year as well.

Do you plan on running from a generator a lot?

Did the old one fail due to low voltage? Just wondering. Many do not check the voltage, and many 30 amp campgrounds tend to run less than 105 volts on a hot day. . .

Some in small campers want to buy a smaller unit, like 8,000 Btu, so that the compressor runs a longer time before cooling the 8' wide X 12' long camper off. This helps with humidity, something you do not need to deal with in Washington. You just think it is humid up there. Also the smaller units use less power, save gas in the generator.

Normally something over 30' long might require a larger 15,000 Btu unit, or perhaps dual units over 34' long.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
