Mark gets the 'prepared' award here. He does carry lots of stuff.
My emergency kit is always taken and has a seasonal slant. While we do almost no summer camping, in winter I carry chains and even more recovery equip. not for me but for the unlucky SOB that wound up in the ditch and spilled his coffee. Or the brand new Jeep driver who just knew it would go anywhere in four feet of snow with those stock street tires and no deflation.
I keep things on board that will allow me to work on the engine, change a tire, fix a flat (on the wheel), replace bad hoses, belts, and wires to keep going to the nearest 'real' repair place. When we get way out there, I try to be even more self sufficient. Being unprepared is the best teacher for next the time. Go ahead, make all your mistakes when you are not way out there. On a recent trip on the Mojave Road, I had my little trailer so I also carried a 5 foot prybar for off-road emergency fender work so the wheels would still roll without rubbing.
Depends on the destination and how far you are from civilization.
