I have been thinking about a Spot satellite messenger since we sometimes disappear into the Hinterboonies for extended periods and my mom gets to worrying when she doesn't hear from us for a week. A quick "OK" message every couple of days would set her mind at ease.

I second the M500 and .40, although a KahrP380 is nice for hiking as well. Regarding SPOT, we've had one for 5 years and they work great! I use it for motorcycle trips and with the automatic reporting (position report every 10 minutes) it gives those at home a great piece of mind. If you ever get in a real pinch, help is just the push of a button away. SPOT
