Aedubber,
If possible, try to sit and think about what you would want loaded in the truck bed. Coolers, maybe firewood???, etc...
Also, would you be putting a topper (bed cap) on the truck because if you do, there is 200lbs from you payload minimum!
While you can load stuff in the trailer to help eliminate the low payload (vs tow rating) of a 1500, it is a pain doing so!!! And yes, I speak from experience!!! We just stepped up to a 2500HD for those exact reasons. We were over on gvwr a little, but under both awr's. had a topper also, on our '10 Chevy 1500 ccsb 4x4.
Power wise as mentioned- we had the 5.3/6spd/3.42 combo and I never felt I needed more, though it would have been fun to have more power!!!! Lol We live in Mi, only travelled in state towing so no mountain experience.
Unless the Ram has upped the payload, I think I would only consider the Ford w/ the hd payload option or the Gm "twins" with max tow pkg!
Good luck deciding!!!!
