What unusual location have you parked overnight at?

TCM has come up with another great topic, for discussion. CLICKY So I thought it would be good to see what many of you have done, yourselves, while traveling out on the road.

My personal favorite, for parking overnight, in this article was the Car Wash. While I have stayed in many an abandoned gas station parking area, but I certainly will keep Car Washes (as there are many abandoned ones) on my check list.

  • I got to stay overnight at Bodie State Historical Park once. That was wild - parked right between two hills (at the top of the mountain) with no one and nothing in sight except the ghost town.
  • only thing I can think of is in a pull out on hwy 58 at the top of Tehachapi pass at the State Prison exit.....
  • In Plush, Oregon. They have a "rest area", though it looks more like a small town park that didn't have anyone to take care of it.

Stayed overnight in the gravel lot before driving on to the sun stone mines.

Sometimes parking at the local truck stop parking has it problems with the local clintel knocking on your trailer door all hours of the night...
  • Not with my TC, but with my S-10 shortbed pickup and camper cover years ago. Two of us camped in a parking lot across from the Kansas City convention hall for two days during an Archery tournament. Yes, it was a tight fit with us and gear.
  • My strangest but also the prettiest was on top of a reclaimed strip mine on the side of an ATV trail where I couldn't see a single street light despite being able to see for miles in all 360* view. Okay, maybe not strange out west, but this was way east of the Mississippi.

Not sure what difference the type of rig. Small airports after offering to pay for "tying down" are one of my favorite and I should have taken a video of the DHL people catching MOST of the packages they were throwing... good for a laugh when they realize it's not a airplane. Construction Company yards with permission... usually with an offer of free electric. Gravel quarries... usually in AK. Home Depots as you can get free water too. Cracker Barrel, but it usually costs $20 for breakfast if they are open early enough. Different churches... helps to have their shields to display. OK, just kidding.

Interesting that you mention the Airport. There is this one that I always park at, as it is a "pinch point" for me traveling. Meaning that I need to cross an important river with no other bridges nearby. The management noticed me and were happy to see me, for that extra pair of eyes at a small rural airport. They invited me to park next to the terminal for the electrical hookups they have there for pilots to park their RVs when they come in to fly their hangered planes. I always decline, as I prefer the solitude of the undeveloped Hanger area and being off the grid.

OK, just kidding about the shields, but not on Sundays and some Wednesday night. Flee markets when not open.
  • Downtown Sturgis SD. Free power at almost any large parking lot. Large store lot.. not so unusual. Free power? Darn near unheard of.

Oh, I see this is truck campers. Oops.
