Lithium batteries are not regulated as hazardous waste, but lithium, cobalt and nickel will still leach out of them and into the groundwater if they are put in a landfill. Lithium mining has a huge enviormental impact as well. Any form of energy storage and transfer (energy cannot be created or destroyed) has environmental implications. People tend to focus on that comes out of the tailpipe (or lack therof) but the overall picture is much larger.
