What would you do?

My family and I have had a vacation planned with our trailer we bought new in September. Because of schedules, we haven't been able to use it till this last weekend. We left for a 5 1/2 hour drive, got there, set up, and...no A/C. Tried everything to no avail. We called Coach.net which is a roadside assistance/mobile mechanic that our trailers warranty includes. He said the unit could not be serviced "in the field". Due to it being very hot and humid, having 2 cats that were panting, we packed and hooked back up, and headed back home with a very disappointed 6 year old. What a great day.
My question to you folks is, what recourse do we have with the manufacturer? I basically want my day reimbursed: fuel, wear&tear on my truck, food, etc. Thank goodness the parks we were staying in all let us out of our reservations. I'm out all of yesterday, today, and then driving 30 miles to a dealer on Monday, not to mention trying to come up with a plan for the rest of the week.
One other note is the A/C worked perfectly at my pre deliver inspection. What do you guys think?

I would get it fixed and go camping.

X2, if things like this have not happened to you, you have not camped long enough. The mfg is not responsible for these incidental damages and won't do anything; that's a dead end street. Sorry for your troubles.
  • No voltmeter, but breakers, microwave, fuses, fridge, etc. were all good. Just blew air, which in my automotive knowledge through the years points to no Freon. As far as checking every item on the trailer, I've had everything from the worst(salvage titled theft recovery that needed tons of work), to all the rest of my RV's that were new, and never has one had any problem that kept me from camping. I expect when I have something new, even something put together as flimsily as an RV, that either items on it will work or that during my warranty the manufacturer will do everything they can to make me happy. Thank you for all the replies, and if anyone else has experience with this please keep replying.
  • If I couldn't have figured it out myself I would gave paid for a mobile rv tech to come fix it. Packing up and heading home would not have been an option.
    There's always a way.

If the ac worked at pdi I can't see where it was the dealers fault.

Consider this a good lesson. Give everything a test before you head out. Try the ac, fridge etc.

Enjoy your new trailer and get out there soon. Make some good memories for that 6 year old.
  • I guess now you'll know to check out all systems about a week before taking off on a trip. Re-imbursement - sorry, but not going to happen. Hope you're not fuming over something that may turn out to be operator error. Please let us know what the problem turns out to be. All of us that have traveled extensively have had to find a repair shop during a trip at one time or another - just part of the game.
  • I think they are going to say they are only responsible for the equipment not the incidentals. You can always try though. Its sort of like when a computer fails or a camera goes bad...they are not responsible for the content. Some people will probably tell you that you should have checked it at home first but working today does not guarantee it will work tomorrow.

Two years ago we almost had to leave a campground because of AC issues. It was 105 degrees and no air and two dogs. Turned out it was a brownout that kept popping the circuit. Thankfully a couple hours later the temps lowered enough that there was enough electricity to go around and never had the issue pop p again that weekend. I don't think it was the campgrounds fault....the next day was just as hot and the AC worked.

Sorry you lost that family time.
  • How were you powering the AC? Did you have the trailer plugged into 30a shore power? Check the breakers? Did anything else that uses 120v like the microwave work?

Good luck getting your expenses covered.
  • Don't know about all warranties but mine specifically excluded mileage to and from dealer. I think that's pretty standard.

Did you have a voltmeter with you at the campground? It could have been a problem with the park electric supply.
