All depends on your use. Couple trips to the state park every year or rolling x country pounding out the miles? If the former, I'd keep it (although I'm not very well read on the hitch issue). If the latter, get a full size truck or SUV.
The upside is 4 runners have excellent resale value, so you'll get good money for it comparatively speaking.
4Runner is body on frame with a solid rear axle.
