I did all the math from all the angles. All the costs of the different logistics.
We are getting a brand new 6x12 enclosed cargo trailer and I'm kissing over $3000 goodbye.
Sucks but the nomadic lifestyle does have its costs.
There are no used ones available here that are real or are still for sale. They sell like crazy. So I'll just tie up some money in it and sell it when. The boat project is over.
Harbor Freight type trailers are good prices but a little small and would take me a long time to build and enclosure on. Time is money, so I have to shell out for the pre built.
Well, whadaya know....
IDK the whole situation, but yeah typically you get your money back out of a trailer. To the point that if a trailer I own isn't suitable or practical for the load or situation, my next step is buy one, use it, sell it, 2 days or 2 years later.
So far, I think I've actually made money on most and spent less than renting a uhaul trailer on the others. Some of which were around for a year or 2 before selling.
Couple things to consider, you don't say where you are located, but I got a good deal on a MTI trailer last year in the midwest. Sold it for considerably more than I bought it for, on the West Coast. Also, convince the dealer you're receiving/registering it in another state and you can forego the sales tax at point of purchase if that's more advantageous down the road.
Last, what is the storage arrangement for the trailer? They're much easier to break into or steal than a conex that you already own. I've had theft and attempted theft of trailers that had 1 or more wheels removed for security. Never had a conex stolen and less breakins into conexes than cargo trailers.
Will cost you about $100/hr to have the conex moved on a rollback truck if that makes sense financially or for security reasons.
