well, this thread is over.
For future readers....
YES you need a hitch extension in this situation, UNLESS you extend the trailer tongue as reccomended as an alternative.
YES, square nose trailers will contact the back of the camper quicker than a v nose, all other things equal (hitch/tongue length, etc).
If your spacially challenged, or do not have visual confirmation, a spotter can and does help.
Remember the days before the Internet, when a person had to rely on their own sense, experience and education and resist the urge to get reccomendations from 20 people you don't know as a placebo for putting forth the effort yourself to figure things out.
