Piano, I had no idea that the phase change would require so much more energy! Thanks for the tip. I think what this means is that if I fill my water tank pretty full, it will be less likely to freeze -- my concern was with the low point drain, which is where the pump pickup tube is located. But if the water in the tank does not freeze, maybe the natural circulation of the water in the tank is what kept the low point from freezing.
