I service the bearings once a year pre-season along with a brake inspection and adjustment. For the couple of bucks in seals and grease, I'm guaranteed a trouble free camping season. For me the price and time to service them for this guarantee is a no-brainier.
I think he was referring to taking them apart for inspection without putting them back correctly.
