I agree!! Over maintenance by the unknowing or just plain incompetent causes many problems for the novice.
Yeah, but incompetence has nothing to do with PROPER maintenance. If you don't know what you're doin, then keep your hands off! But if you don't know what you're doing doesn't mean that people who do are causing mechanical failures.
The problem is sometimes "finding that person that knows what they are doing".
Sadly, sometimes shop personnel that get assigned to "lower level" jobs like oil changes, bearing servicing, tire mounting, etc, "may" not be the best trained and supervised guys in the shop.
And therin lies the potential to do more harm than good. Got perfectly acceptable performing bearings ???? .....then they get "worked on" by someone not properly trained, and you end up suffering a failure.
All of which is why over the years, I have done a lot of this stuff myself.
