But the difference here is in the case of changing oil, your owners manual says specifically change it every x miles. That is fact. Arguing about if that is enough or if higher end synthetics provide additional benefit is opinion. I have yet to see anything resembling fact (other than the previous poster lc0338) about how frequently to repack bearings. This forum would be a heck of a lot more boring if trailer manufacturers put a maintenance schedule in the owner manual like car companies do.
Here's Lippert's recommendation:
Bearing Maintenance - Lippert
Here is Dexter's:
Dexter Axle maintenance schedule
I'd assume others are about the same 1yr/12k.
THANK YOU!
I am new to towing a camper/travel trailer. I have seasonally camped for 17 years, but maintaining a road worthy vehicle is the "new" part.
I did not cherish the fact that I needed to repack my bearings but I am forever grateful to this forum for making me aware that I should. I was appalled to discover how badly they needed service.
If I don't change my oil, my car engine seizes up and won't run. I pay the price. If my tires, brakes, bearings, hitch, etc, fails I endanger everyone in close proximity.
It is imperative to me that I take the utmost precaution to keep my loved ones AND other strangers I pass on the road SAFE.
For that I am responsible and quite frankly could not live with myself if my neglect ruined or ended another person's life.
Thanks again.
