What's up with the DEF Delete?

In my search for a truck it seems like any 2015-2016 F350 SRW is gone the day it hits the lot. I did find a very nice lower mileage in great shape but the salesmen told me it had the DEF delete done. From what I understand it removes all the mechanical parts for the DEF and re-programs the computer. He says it's a service his shop offers and has become fairly popular. Claims to still pass emissions etc but offers better MPG and HP, but frankly, it makes me nervous. I feel like I'd rather have a stock truck. I called my mechanic and he didn't know much about it. Is this something to stay away from?

  • Thanks, this truck is out of warranty so it's a non issue. I am just concerned about mechanical issues and annual inspections. This could be a good thing, I simply have no idea. How much to get it back to stock?
  • Ford's policy is to not allow warranty work on trucks without intact emissions.

Removing emissions equipment is a federal offense, and that dealer is a risk of high fines for performing that service. There's little risk to you (other than the aforementioned warranty implications) unless you fail to disclose the modifications when you sell.

I doubt you'd ever get hassled for it in NC, but if you moved to CA, you'd have a very difficult time registering it.

The biggest thing that comes to mind is engine warranty. I bet any engine repairs needed would be denied any warranty claims. I also doubt what the salesman said about their shop doing DEF deletes. Assuming you are at a Ford dealer, any emmissions alterations could cost the dealership tons of money from fines imposed by the EPA and could jeapordize his franchise with Ford.
