- ShinerBockExplorerYes, overheating was common with the LLY due the intake and cooling system design. There were even a few lawsuits over it.If it didn't happen to you then consider yourself one of the lucky ones or you did not really tow much weight.
There is a reason why GM(and the others) started increasing the size of their grilles and designed intakes to pull cooler air with less restriction. . This is also the reason why the LBZ had a larger less restrictive intake pipe with less sharper bends.

What's your, knowledge, thoughts, experience, on the GM Duramax diesel?
It's good but I would stay away from the LMM due to lacking def on the emissions side.
As for the LP5 it's a completely new design that has had some bumps along the way.
The LLY was infamous for overheating. It was GMs first attempt to up HP from the LB7 and was a disaster when towing heavy.
I guess our LLY must be special because it has never over heated on any climb and I like the 5 speed. I use the scanguage II. chevman
My parents previous truck 05 Duramax never overheated either. I know they pulled some pretty good hills in the smokey mountains with it.- DutchmenSportExplorerI don't care about numbers, statistics, anyone's idea, any scholarly critiques, or manufacturers hype.... all I know is, I love mine and it's had absolutely zero issues since I purchased it new. It tows like a beast. I absolutely love this truck. Its a 3500 Dually long bed crew cab Duramax Diesel. Did I mention, I absolutely love this truck!

But it’s an easy fix and if someone is shopping for an old truck, a good condition lily, needing a little retrofit work is as solid as any of the era and better than a 6.0 Powersmoke.
But you still have a 5 speed tranny. - Grit_dogNavigator II

Well, the Dmax is the ONLY diesel out of the big 3 that hasn’t changed displacement or been scrapped for an all new engine. That says a bunch. Apples to apples, the Dmax gives up nothing to any of the others, year by year, save for the Cummins being simpler for some repairs and the Cummins still being very arguably the longest lasting internals.
The Cummins 6.7 is not ALL NEW.
